Yay or Nay: Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Lips Review

Hey Beautiful!

I'm back today for another "Yay or Nay" post! This time I'm reviewing the Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Lips.

Left to Right: Capella GSL5, Alpha GSL2, Sirius GSL4, Electra GSL3, Vega GSL1

Barry M describes this product as:

"New Gelly Hi Shine Lips from Barry M bring a gleaming new meaning to the power pout. Soft, moisturising lip crayons in 5 hot shades; with their ultra-rich, highly pigmented formula, Gelly Hi Shine Lips create an intense depth of colour with an unbelievable sheen. Love shine? Wear new Hi Gelly Shine Lips with Barry M's famous Gelly Nail Paint for the ultimate glossy look."

My aim in this post is to see if these beauties live up to the description!

I'm going to be honest, I bought this lip product only because I was highly impressed with the Barry M Gelly Nail Paints and so I figured why not give these a go. Not only that, but the packaging is so pretty. I mean who doesn't like crayons!

I'll be reviewing these with regards to the description above, focusing on the words that I've highlighted in bold italics

  • Soft? Unbelievably! No pulling no tugging when I applied them. However, I would like to stress that they will melt easily, so keep them away from warmth. I put mine in the fridge!

  • Moisturising? Yes! They are super creamy and kept my lips soft and supple. No dry, cracked lips. They can get a little sticky, not "lip gloss" kind of sticky, more like "lip balm wearing off" kind of sticky but otherwise a very comfortable wear.

  • Ultra-rich, highly pigmented formula? This is a tricky one. They are pigmented, but because they aren't matte, the true colour pay off starts coming through on the second application after the first "blot" (except in the case of Alpha). They have a sweet scent and taste to them which does wear off - or you become immune, which ever comes first! So if you aren't a sweet scent/taste kind of person, don't worry. It DOES go away!

  • Unbelievable sheen? Most definitely! Although the first application doesn't deliver the best colour pay off, the sheen is beautiful. It's not over powering where it looks like you just stuck your mouth in a bottle of oil and it's dripping down your face, it's just right. Perfect for those of you who aren't fans of super glossy lips.
Capella- Frosted Pink
Sirius- Warm Pink
Alpha- Orange based Red
Electra- Shocking Pink
Vega- Plum/Berry Red

(For the purposes of this review, the swatch pictures have not been edited and so are a true representation of the colours of the products to the best of my ability.)

Verdict: Yay! All in all, these are super cute fun lip colours. They are the perfect hand bag sized little beauties which makes them great if you're on the go (minus the melting!) I am a little worried that these don't have a twist mechanism to bring up more product and have to be sharpened instead. I'll probably stick them in the fridge before hand to avoid any mess if they start melting. My favourite shade is definitely Sirius!

Have any of you tried these? What did you think of them and what's your favourite shade? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Colouring!

  1. Oh man, I've gotta get my hands on Alpha somehow. That orange is so perfect! Kinda wish Vega was a little darker, but it's really nice too. We don't get Barry M in Australia, but I really wish we would. So jealous of the drugstore products you guys have in the UK! :)

    1. I was hoping Vega would be darker too but its buildable. If you're jealous of the UK drugstores, Im jealous of the US ;-)

  2. All of these look gorgeous - fabulous swatches! :)
